Sharing The Wonder Of Jesus With Children

Children are attracted to twinkling lights, especially at Christmas. There are so many lights to see and so much wonder in the air!

I recently experienced the feeling of wonder through my nine-month-old grandson, Judah. He saw twinkling Christmas tree lights for the very first time. In an instant, his tiny body, which is usually perpetually-in-motion, just stilled. Intense curiosity transformed his face. His eyes, always roaming the room in search of the next best thing, were focused solely on one sparkling light. Then ever-so-slowly he reached for the light. His face radiated with delight and his breath gave way to a deep, audible exhale of wonder.

But what is “wonder”? I would describe it as the feeling of surprise we get in an instant when we discover new information that delights us. Wonder sparks curiosity. It makes us stop, investigate, and want to learn more. It inspires us to reach out and grab onto a wonderful new treasure.

Wonder is something that God desires from us in our relationship with Him. He wants us to never stop learning about Him, never stop reaching for Him or approaching Him with wonder. Most of all, He wants us to grab onto Him alone to navigate this fallen world.

In John 8:12 Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The person of Jesus inspires wonder in children.

At Bible2School, we introduce children to Jesus as God’s Son, our Savior, and we do this during public school hours. Over and over again, like my grandson Judah, we see hundreds of kids respond with awe and wonder to Jesus each week. As the book of Revelation, chapter twenty-two states, “He is the bright and morning star” and inspires wonder so our kids seek to know more about Him and His love for them.

We need to tell children that Jesus rescued us from darkness and He is light and He is worthy of our wonder. It doesn’t matter if children have heard of Jesus or not, they recognize Him as light and move toward Him.

As adults, we need to make sure we are filled up with the wonder of Jesus first, so it can overflow into our children. But how do we cultivate the wonder of Jesus in our lives and share it with our children? Let’s take some tips from my grandson, Judah, and his journey of wonder:

First, be still. In order to concentrate and focus on anything you need to be still. Be still inwardly and outwardly. Let God bestow wonder upon you. Spend time in prayer and Bible reading. Listen to hear God’s quiet voice in the stillness. Encourage children to do the same. Read the Bible with them. Pray with them. Talk about Jesus. Whisper to get their attention. Being still is key to experiencing wonder.

Second, be curious. Express the wonder of Jesus by investigating. Let your mind ask questions: What does God’s Word say about Jesus? How does God want you to share the biblical account of Jesus’ birth with your child? What part of the Christmas message will resonate with your child? What part of it resonates with you? How can the Gospel message be connected to your child’s experiences on their level?

Last, be delighted. Connect the dots for your child by declaring all the things God has done through the Christmas story. Jesus became our Savior. God saved the world through Him. Jesus is a wondrous blessing to us all.

Enjoy sharing the gift of wonder with your child this Christmas! Celebrate Jesus with them and don’t miss the blessing!
