How to Create a God-Honoring Home
Every home gives off a certain feeling when you walk into it. Most of us could say that we want our homes to be a place of love and peace, where guests feel welcome and comfortable. A place that encourages communication and growth. A place that is a haven for our families. For believers of Christ, we want it to be obvious that Jesus is alive in our home! We want it to be a place of worship, not just a house with four walls.
So, how can we be intentional about creating a God-honoring home? In this blog, we outline a few ideas to help bring your faith to life inside the walls of your home.
Strong Foundation & Protection
It’s important that we intentionally create a strong foundation for our home. Through prayer, ask for God’s blessing on your home and for His protection over your home, guarding it against spiritual attacks. Go on a prayer walk with your kids and pray over each room — yes, even the bathrooms! Let them know you are asking God to build your home and your lives upon Him, a solid rock, so that when the storms come, you have a firm foundation. This is a great lesson for your kids!
It’s also important to ask God to not only protect your home, but anything and anyone that enters it. What are you allowing into your home and how will it influence your family? Make sure everyone is on the same page regarding the kinds of TV shows, music, and even friends that make their way into the four walls. Negative influences that enter your home will impact the strong foundation you have been working hard to build, so fill your house with positive, God-filled entertainment and friends.
Family Values
As a family, sit down and make a list of values that you feel are important. Then, narrow it down to the top 5 that everyone agrees on. These are things that should be discussed and referenced often within the family. Create a “family values wall” and display them as art so they are a daily reminder of what’s important. Give gold stars when you catch someone doing things on their own that are in line with the Family Values Wall and celebrate it.
Engage the Senses
SIGHT: Surround yourself with God’s Word with Scripture wall art.
SOUND: Play worship music. Did you know there is a direct connection between the music we listen to and our behavior? For inspiration, check out this podcast with radio host, Lisa Landis!
TASTE: Families connect during mealtime. So, make family dinner a priority in your home and cook meals that appeal to everyone. Use this time to pray, connect, and dream together.
TOUCH: Make your home comfortable. Create a quiet and relaxing space to encourage your family to read God’s Word and spend time reflecting. Be sure to include a comfortable chair and a cozy blanket!
SMELL: You’ve likely heard the saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” God wants us to be good stewards of our things, and that includes taking care of our home. Having a clean home (that smells good) encourages achievement, a positive mindset, and satisfaction. Get your kids involved with maintaining a clean home. Hospitality
Remember that you live in your home for a reason — God specifically placed you in your town, your neighborhood, and the exact home you’re in for a purpose. The Bible encourages us to treat strangers and friends alike. So, maintain an open door and welcome visitors to your home. Intentionally look for opportunities to invite people over for coffee, a playdate, or a warm meal and use this as a way to help spread God’s kingdom. You want visitors to walk into your home, feel the presence of the Lord, and think to themselves “Wow, I want my home to feel like this!”
Creating a God-honoring home is an important part of our spiritual journey. We spend most of our time in our home, so it needs to reflect what is important to us. Make the decision to honor God in your home, and even more when no one is looking. Things won’t be perfect – but lead by example and honor God no matter what. And remember, our earthly home is not our forever home — we have a better one waiting for us in Heaven.
