God Makes Us Unique & Valuable

God created the world with variety. He made every tree, every snowflake, every animal species very different. In fact, He created over 400,000 different flowering plants — so yes, God enjoys variety! What’s even more fascinating is that He made every human different as well. Not only does He design our physical bodies in a unique way, but also our personalities and our talents. Imagine how boring the world would be if we were all exactly the same? As parents and caretakers, it’s important that we teach our children that God made them unique and valuable and that no one else in the world is like them!

David talks about the role that God plays in bringing us into existence in Psalm 139:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Refrigerator Fingerprints

We are the “original” — we are not a copy! Remember, God is perfect and He does not make mistakes. So, He made us exactly the way He planned to, according to His perfect plan.

We need to teach children that they are made in God’s image. When kids understand this, they will feel loved and will embrace their differences. As these children grow older, they will be less likely to have comparison issues and will learn to appreciate everyone’s  uniqueness.

To help your kids visually understand that we are all uniquely designed, do the refrigerator fingerprints activity with everyone in your family. Using ink and a piece of paper, have everyone put their fingerprint side-by-side labeled with their name. Show them how each one varies! Tell them that even though you’re family, you are all still unique! Hang this on the refrigerator as a daily reminder to love and embrace their uniqueness.

Highlight Purpose & Talents

Each of us is designed to bring Him glory in a way that no one else can. God created us to live right now — in this exact generation — for a purpose. We were all intentionally created to have different personalities, talents, dreams, and influence to fulfill a purpose for His plan.

To help your child understand this, make a list of everyone’s talents within your family. Together, discuss the differences between each person and brainstorm ways each person can use those talents to bring God glory!

It’s important that we truly believe that God designed us intentionally, knit us together in our mother’s womb, and that we are wonderfully made. We need to teach children their unique value in Christ. Want to dive into this topic even more?
